AMC Spikes Becker 3-0

Leicester, MA. --- The Anna Maria College women's volleyball team defeated Becker College 3-0 on Wednesday evening in non-conference action. The game scores were 25-21, 25-23, 25-20.

Anna Maria's record now stands at 3-9 while Becker falls to 3-12.

In the first game, the AMCATS jumped out to an early 8-1 lead off the serve of freshman Nichole Robbie (Bellingham, MA), a run that included five service aces. The Hawks would rally after a timeout by Head Coach Andrea Belis, cutting the Anna Maria lead to two at 10-8. It would not be enough, however, as the Anna Maria would eventually pull away at the end.

The Hawks were more competitive in the second game, pulling within one late off the serve of
junior Joanna Slomiak (Brockton, MA) with the score 24-23 in favor of the AMCATS. It would be as close as Becker would get as junior Melissa Stedman (Mason, NH) finished off a kill to put AMC up two games to none.

The third game went back and forth throughout with neither team managing more than a three point lead until a kill by junior Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, MA) followed by a match-winning service ace by freshman Kelly Delany (Charlton, MA) gave Anna Maria the 25-20 victory for the game and match.

For the AMCATS, Robbie filled the stat sheet with nine kills, eight service aces and eight digs. Acosta also came up strong with eight kills. Sophomore Alex Rodriguez (Puerto Rico, MA) registered seven kills and eight digs. Sophomore Megan Leyton (Eastham, MA) doled out 23 assists while freshman Kelly Delaney (Charlton, MA) tallied 22 digs.

Slomiak led the Hawks with five kills and five service aces, to go along with seven digs. Junior Nicole Morse (Alton, NH) notched four kills and two solo blocks. Sophomore Jacqueline Chila (Eddington, ME) had four kills and six digs. Freshman Danielle Robbie (Bellingham, MA) and sophomore Melvina Nadeau (Everett, MA) each contributed 13 digs

Becker returns to action next Tuesday, October 4th, as they host the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont in a 7:00pm match. Anna Maria hosts a tri-match this Friday against the Saints of Emmanuel and the Blue Jays of Saint Joseph's of Connecticut.
