Lesley Battles Past AMC on Dig Pink Night

PAXTON, Mass. (10.24.11) – The Lesley University women's volleyball team defeated Anna Maria, 3-2, in a non-conference match-up during the team's Dig Pink event at the Fuller Activities Center Monday night. With the win, The Rams improve to 6-15, while the loss drops the AMCATS to 3-20.

The Lynx took the first set by a 25-14 margin. Sloppy play by the AMCATS allowed the visitors to jump out to an early 10-4 advantage over AMC. The Lynx never looked back as Kaitlyn Miller (Leesport, P.A.) took charge by adding a pair of aces and a kill down the stretch in the victory.

Lesley jumped out to a fast lead in the second set, leading 11-4 behind kills from Megan Ortwein (Shanghai, China) and Danielle Johnson (Waterford, Conn.). Kills from Nicole Robbie (Bellingham, Mass.) and Alex Rodriguez (Puerto Rico, PR) put Anna Maria within three at 20-17, however the Lynx rebound and put the AMCATS away 25-20. The visitors used clutch closing efforts from Kayla Henry (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Alyson Finbow (Fair Lawn, N.J.).

Facing elimination, the AMCATS stormed out of the gates to a 12-6 lead. Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, Mass.) added a pair of kills while Fabienne Jules (Leominster, Mass.), Nichole Robbie and Alex Rodriguez all added a kill each. Kaitlyn Miller's aggressive play brought the visitors within six to 23-17, however, it was too little, too late as Anna Maria took the third game 25-19.

Like the previous set, the AMCATS again jumped out to a quick 12-6 lead. The Lynx responded by bringing the game to 13-9, but down three was the closest they would come as the AMCATS evened the match with a 25-19 victory in game four. Sandy Acosta and Alex Rodriguez each starred with three kills each while Nicole Robbie also added a pair of kills.

The Lynx looked destined to cruise to victory in the final frame, as they held a 7-2 advantage on careless play by the AMCATS. Kills by Nichole Robbie, Sandy Acosta and Fabienne Jules brought the AMCATS back to life and knotted the score at 11-11. Sandy Acosta pushed the score in Anna Maria's favor 13-11 on a pair of kills. Despite being just two points away from victory, the AMCATS sputtered as a pair of errors and a pair of Megan Ortwin kills allowed the Lynx to go on a 4-0 run and take both the game and the match by a score of 15-13 and 3-2 respectively.
