Field Hockey Falls 1-0 in GNAC Tournament Play

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Anna Maria College field hockey team dropped a hard fought 1-0 battle to the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University in the first round of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament play on Saturday evening.

The AMCATS finish their season with an overall record of 7-12. Johnson and Wales improves to 7-11 overall and advances to face top-seeded St. Joseph's College in the semifinals on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wildcats scored their first and only goal of the game in the first half of the game. This would be the only goal they needed as they did not allow a goal over the entire 70 minutes of play. Despite outshooting Johnson & Wales 8-5 (5-2 on goal) the AMCATS were unable to capitalize on a scoring opportunity. The AMCATS were also awarded five corners while the Wildcats were given four.

SCORING

The AMCATS came out strong as they tallied seven shots to the Wildcats one shot over the first 25 minutes of the game.

It was on their second shot of the game, 26 minutes into play, that Johnson & Wales freshman, Morgan Matthews (Bethel, Conn.) received a pass from Katarina Brunette (Cohoes, N.Y.) and put the ball to the lower left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
This was the only goal of the game as the remaining 44 minutes of play saw just three more shots from JWU and one more from the AMCATS.

The AMCATS saw the final opportunity of the game as time ran out and they were awarded a penalty corner. The Wildcat defense came out strong and did not allow Anna Maria to get a shot off.

GOALKEEPERS

Junior goalkeeper Bryanna Tobin (Deep River, Conn.) had one save in the loss as she saw just two shots on goal. Sophomore, Claire Nolan (West Bridgewater, Mass.) had four saves to clinch the shutout for the Wildcats.
