PAXTON, Mass.—Two first-half goals proved to be the difference as the Simmons College field hockey team downed the AMCATS of Anna Maria College by a score of 2-0 in Saturday's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game.
The win boosts the Sharks to 5-3 on the season and 2-0 in GNAC play, while Anna Maria falls to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in league action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Sharks held a 20-5 advantage in shots over the course of the game, including two goals in the first half, to claim the victory.
Simmons got on the scoreboard early as Sammy Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.) poked in a cross from Jenna Gagnon (Waterville, Maine) just eight minutes into the game.
The Sharks struck again with just 11 seconds remaining in the half as Julie Saltamartini (East Hampstead, N.H.) tallied a goal on the run. Gagnon provided the assist.
At the end of the first half, Simmons held a 12-1 lead in shots and a 7-0 advantage in penalty corners.
GOALKEEPERS
AMCAT netminder Bryanna Tobin (Deep River, Conn.) recorded nine saves in net, while Simmons' Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) stopped three shots for the shutout victory.
THE SERIES
The win marks the fourth-straight for Simmons in the series with Anna Maria, improving their record to 4-1.
WHAT'S NEXT
The AMCATS travel to Regis on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. non-conference game before embarking on a three-game home stand from September 29th through October 6th.
