PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College field hockey team scored two second-half goals to down the Pilgrims of New England College, 2-0, in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.
The win marks the third in-a-row for the AMCATS, who improve to 4-3 overall. NEC falls to 3-5 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half proved scoreless, even though both teams had solid opportunities to score. In the 19th minute, New England College's Taylor Daileanes (Londonderry, N.H.) had a wide-open look on net, but her shot sailed left of the net.
Just over two-and-a-half minutes later, the AMCATS got two quick shots off of a penalty corner, but both shots were saved by the NEC goalkeeper Michaela Clark (Dorchester, Mass.).
Anna Maria finished with a 7-4 advantage in shots in the first half, while NEC had a 3-1 edge in penalty corners.
The second half saw significantly more shots which against favored the AMCATS, 11-7.
SCORING
The scoreless streak ended in the 46th minute when Anna Maria's Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, Mass.) dribbled around a defender to the top of the circle, where she fired a hard shot for first score of the game.
Nine minutes later, the AMCATS had as scrum in front of the net in which Moran shot twice before feeding the ball through the goaltender's leg's to freshman Anne Melanson (Grafton, Mass.) who tipped it in for her second goal of the season.
GOALKEEPERS
AMCAT netminder Bryanna Tobin (Deep River, Conn.) made four saves in net for Anna Maria including three in the second half to protect her shutout. Clark tallied seven saves in defeat for NEC.
THE SERIES
The win marks the third-in-a-row for Anna Maria in the series against NEC, improving their record to 3-8 dating back to 2003.
WHAT'S NEXT
The AMCATS have a busy week as they travel to Worcester State on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. contest before hosting Simmons College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
NEC is also in action on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. home contest against Colby-Sawyer.
