Field Hockey Suffers 2-1 Overtime Heartbreaker to Monks

PAXTON, Mass.—Freshman Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) scored 4:45 into overtime to lead the Saint Joseph's College field hockey team to a 2-1 win over the AMCATS of Anna Maria College in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener for both teams.

The win boosts the Monks to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in GNAC action, while the loss drops the AMCATS to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Monks dominated the stat sheet as they held a 17-3 advantage in shots and an 11-1 lead in penalty corners. Anna Maria's goal came on their only shot of the first half, while the Monks took nine shots in the first frame, one of which tied the game at 1-1 in the 34th minute.

Battling a steady downpour for most of the game, the second half got increasingly physical. Three green cards and two yellow cards were called in the second, and Anna Maria played a player-down for nearly the last five minutes of regulation.

A scoreless second half forced extra time, where the Monks scored with 10:15 left in the first overtime period.

SCORING

Anna Maria's Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, Mass.) scored first as she collected the ball inside the 16-yard line and worked it back and forth around a defender until she found a clear shot in the 30th minute.

Less than four minutes later, the Monks scored off a penalty corner in the last minute of the first half. Kelsey Dumond (Sabattus, Maine) netted the goal, while Hayley Winslow (Falmouth, Maine) assisted from the corner.

In overtime, Pomerleau collected the ball 30-yards out, controlled it around AMCAT defender Lauren Beauregard (Hubbardston, Mass.), and carried it until just outside the crease, where she placed it just inside the near post to win the game.

GOALKEEPERS

AMCAT netminder Bryanna Tobin (Deep River, Conn.) made five saves in net, while Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) did not make a save in the victory.

THE SERIES

The Monks now hold a 11-3 record against Anna Maria dating back to 2003. Anna Maria's last victory over Saint Joseph's came in the 2014 GNAC semifinals.

WHAT'S NEXT

Anna Maria is on the road for their next two outings as they play Elms in non-conference action on Tuesday, September 13th at 7:00 p.m. They will also play at Rivier next Saturday at noon.
