Field Hockey Falls 1-0 in GNAC Tournament Play
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Anna Maria College field hockey team dropped a hard fought 1-0 battle to the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University in the first round of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament play on Saturday evening.
The AMCATS finish their season with an overall record of 7-12. Johnson and Wales improves to 7-11 overall and advances to face top-seeded St. Joseph's College in the semifinals on Wednesday.
The Wildcats scored their first and only goal of the game in the first half of the game. This would be the only goal they needed as they did not allow a goal over the entire 70 minutes of play. Despite outshooting Johnson & Wales 8-5 (5-2 on goal) the AMCATS were unable to capitalize on a scoring opportunity. The AMCATS were also awarded five corners while the Wildcats were given four.
The AMCATS came out strong as they tallied seven shots to the Wildcats one shot over the first 25 minutes of the game.
The AMCATS saw the final opportunity of the game as time ran out and they were awarded a penalty corner. The Wildcat defense came out strong and did not allow Anna Maria to get a shot off.
