AMCATS Face Holy Cross in Baseball

WORCESTER, Mass. The Anna Maria baseball team played a final tune-up before the ECAC Tournament, dropping a 7-0 decision to inner-city Division I opponent Holy Cross, at Fitton Field. The AMCATS current record stands at 23-17 and with the win, Holy Cross finishes the regular season at 30-20, tying the most wins in program history. The AMCATS have never faced a NCAA Division I team.

Jeff Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.) and Justin Hyland (Spencer, Mass.) collected the only two singles on the day for AMC.

The Crusaders scored five runs in the bottom of the second to pull out to a 5-0 lead behind a big two-run double from sophomore Mike Ahmed (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Freshman Donny Murray (Walpole, Mass.) pitched two full innings, shutting out the AMCATS. Junior Andrew Boyce (Avon, Conn.) came in to continue the team's shutout, pitching another two scoreless innings as the Crusader offense added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the 7-0 victory.

Senior Jeff Scafidi suffered the loss on the mound pitching just an inning and two-thirds, while giving up four earned runs on three hits. Dean Diamantopoulos (Shrewsbury, Mass) and Phil Weihn (Clinton, Mass.) each pitched perfect 7th and 8th innings in relief, respectively.
