AMCATS Swept by Washington College

AUBURNDALE, FL -- The Anna Maria College baseball team dropped to 2-2 on the season after being swept in a double header by Washington College today at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational in Auburndale, FL. The Shoremen won the first game, 12-1, and took the second, 4-3.

GAME 1

In the first game, the Shoremen got on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI triple by senior shortstop Ryan Normoyle and an RBI double by their senior catcher. Washington added two more runs in the top of the second inning on a two-run single. The Shoremen plated three more runs in the top of the fourth as freshman left fielder Scott Matthews scored on an error and Normoyle hit a two-run home run. In the fifth inning, freshman designated hitter Dennis Thomas drove in the Shoremen's eighth run with a double, Matthews drove in the ninth run with a single, Normoyle the 10th and 11th with a two-run single, and Rolewicz the 12th with a single.

Anna Maria broke up the shutout in the sixth inning when Kevin Wodatch (Wallingford, Conn.) led off the inning with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.

Junior Kevin Wodatch took the loss for the AMCATS, pitching four innings and allowing 4 earned runs on seven hits while striking out three batters.

Senior Shane Mattingly got the win for the Shoremen, pitching six strong innings and allowing one run on five hits and no walks while striking out 10 batters.

Mike Gaurnieri (Wallingford, Conn.) was the only Anna Maria player with multiple hits in the opener, going 2-for-3. Justin Hyland (Spencer, Mass.), Joe McNeil (Sutton, Mass.) and Matt Nelson (Framingham, Mass.) each picked up singles in game one.

GAME 2

Anna Maria took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on an RBI single by Jeff Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.). Rolewicz put the Shoremen in front with a two-run single in the bottom half of the inning, but Anna Maria evened the score at 2-2 in the third on an RBI single by Gaurnieri. Washington regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore right fielder Ian Remington  drove in junior third baseman Joe Willis on a squeeze play. An RBI single by Rolewicz in the bottom of the fifth extended the Shoremen's lead to 4-2.

Anna Maria tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh as Carlos Ortiz (Worcester, Mass.) cut the lead to 4-3 with a one-out RBI single, but Andrew Dupre (Northbridge, Mass.) grounded into a double play to end the game.

Freshman Lucas Davis (Spencer, Mass.) took the loss for the AMCATS, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks in 4.2 innings of work. Senior Tim Henderson pitched 1.1 innings in relief striking out one batter.

Rolewicz finished the second game 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Normoyle was 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs scored. Ortiz was the only Anna Maria player with multiple hits in the second game, going 2-for-2 with one RBI.

The AMCATS continue play in the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational Wednesday with a 10:00AM double header against Roger Williams in Auburndale, FL.
