AMCATS WIn on Senior Day, Hyland Sets Record

Worcester, Mass. – Anna Maria College scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning en route to a  5-3 victory over Becker College in non-conference baseball action today at Quinsigamond Community College.  With the victory, Justin Hyland (Spencer, Mass.) broke the AMCATS record for total wins in a season. The junior pitcher picked up his 7th win to break the record set in 2010 by now assistant coach Jim McNamara.

The AMCATS improve to 23-16 while the Hawks drop to 19-19 on the season.

The AMCATS celebrated their senior class of Joe McNeil (Sutton, Mass.), Dean Diamantopoulos (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Zach Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.), Tim Henderson (Wayland, Mass.) and Jeff Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.) in a pre-game ceremony.

In the win the AMCATS could only muster 4 hits, Mike Guarnieri (Wallingford, Conn.), Kevin Wodatch (Wallingford, Conn.), Scafidi and Lucas Davis (Spencer, Mass.) each registered hits.

Senior Joe Corey (Billerica, Mass.) and junior Todd Tompkins (West Haven, Conn.) were both 2-for-4 on the day for the Hawks. Tomkins also had 2 RBI's on the day.

In the home half of the fifth inning the AMCATS scored the first run of the game when Padraig Gilman (Leominster, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded with AMCAT's Kevin Wodatch doubled to right field platting 2 to increase the lead to 3-0. Batting next Scafidi singled through the left side scoring Wodatch and Guarnieri for the 5-0 lead.

Becker broke up the shutout in the top of the sixth inning. With two Hawks on base Tomkins picked up his first RBI of the game with a single to left field scoring Joe Corey. The Hawks scored their second run of the inning on a Tom Natoli (Sufferin, NY) sacrifice fly to center field.

Becker added one more run in the eighth inning when Tomkins hit his 5th home run of the season.

Hyland pitched 5.2 innings for surrendering 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 2. Tim Henderson pitched 2 innings of middle innings relief while Phil Weihn (Clinton, Mass) picked up the save.
