AMCATS Sweep Roger Williams University

Auburndale, Fla. – The Anna Maria College baseball team swept two from Roger Williams University in RussMatt Invitational baseball action today in Auburndale, Florida. In game one the AMCATS came from behind for a 5-3 victory and scored and extra inning 6-5 win. The AMCATS improve to 4-2 on the season.

GAME 1

After giving the Hawks a three spot in the top of the first Anna Maria evened the score at 3-All after one.  Kevin Wodatch (Wallingford, Conn.) led off the inning with double to left center and Justin Hyland (Spencer, Mass.) followed with a walk. Jeff Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.) stepped to the plate and delivered a RBI single to left field, scoring Wodatch easily. Mike Gaurnieri (Wallingford, Conn.) followed with his own RBI single and two batters later Padraig Gilman (Leominster, Mass.) delivered the third RBI single of the inning.

Gaurnieri picked up his second RBI of the game in the bottom of the second inning, to give the AMCATS their first lead of the game.  With the bases loaded with AMCATS, Sullivan drew an RBI walk for the 5-3 lead.

Justin Hyland pitched 5 strong innings allowing just four hits while striking out 3. Tim Henderson (Wayland, Mass.) pitched the last two inning of shutout ball to earn the save.

GAME 2

Kevin Wodatch had an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to give the AMCATS the extra inning win in game two against Hawks of Roger Williams University. Sophomore Phil Weihn (Clinton, Mass.) was credited the win in relief.

Roger Williams grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but the AMCATS erased the deficit in the visitor half of the fourth. Freshman Lucas Davis (Spencer, Mass.) singled to right center to drive in AMC's first run. Anna Maria took a 2-1 lead on Andrew Dupre's (Northbridge, Mass.) sacrifice fly.

The Hawks battled back and scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the fifth Anna Maria manufactured three more runs. With runners on first and second Gilman stepped to the plate to lay down a sacrifice, Gilman placed a nice bunt down the third base side, however the Hawks pitcher fielded the bunt and overthrew third base for the force and the AMCATS plated two runs on the error. Carlos Ortiz had an RBI single to center field for the innings third run and a 5-4 lead.

Anna Maria surrendered a game-tying run in the bottom of the sixth setting up Wodatch's heroics in the eighth.
