AMCATS Split GNAC Pair with Johnson & Wales

Worcester, Mass. -  The Anna Maria College baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Johnson & Wales University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Gaskill Field today on a cool and windy day. Anna Maria scored 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win game one 4-2 while Johnson and Wales took the nightcap 7-2.

 

GAME 1- Anna Maria 4 Johnson & Wales 2

The teams battled through five scoreless innings until Anna Maria was able to plate 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th. After a pair of walks to Justin Hyland (Spencer, Mass.) and Jeff Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.), Carlos Ortiz (Worcester, Mass.) and Joe McNeil (Sutton, Mass.) delivered back-to-back RBI singles to right field for a 2-0 lead. AMC added two more runs on a JWU miscue for the 4-0 advantage.

The Wildcats mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh scoring two runs on RBI's by Jack Hocking and Pete Rosa but it wasn't enough as Anna Maria held on for the win.

Improving to 4-0, Jeff Scafidi pitched 6 brilliant innings allowing the two runs on seven hits while striking out 7 Wildcats. Freshman Lucas Davis (Spencer, Mass.) entered in the seventh inning with an inherited runner on second base. Davis struck out two of the final three batters to earn his second save of the night.

Ortiz and O'Neil paced Anna Maria with two hits and an RBI each. Kevin Wodatch, Mike Gaurnieri and Matt Sullivan each added singles.

GAME 2 – Anna Maria 2 Johnson & Wales 7

In the nightcap, JWU took the early lead when junior James Reyes (Providence, R.I.) singled and came around to score on a wild pitch in the top of the first. The Wildcats extend their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third on an RBI groundout by senior Sean Radu (Fords, N.J.) and a run scoring single by Reyes.

Anna Maria threatened in the bottom of the second when they loaded the bases. They couldn't capitalize, however as JWU held on for the three run advantage.

 JWU broke the game open in the top of the third with three runs, including a sacrifice fly by Radu for the 6-0 lead.

Anna Maria scored single runs in the 5th and 7th innings. Carlos Ortiz produced an RBI single in the fifth while McNeil delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh.

 Radu added an RBI single in the top of the seventh en route to the 7-2 win for the Wildcats.

McNeil was 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI and Mike Gaurnieri finished 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored. Zach Rafferty suffered the setback for Anna Maria, giving up six runs on six hits in two innings work.
