AMCATS Nipped by Hawks

AMCATS Nipped by Hawks

Leicester, Mass. – Becker College used a strong pitching performance by freshman Keon Jenkins (Nashua, N.H.) to defeat Anna Maria 3-1 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Becker junior Todd Tompkins (West Haven, Conn.) scored from third base on a wild pitch. Tompkins reached first on a single through the right side. He made it to third base by stealing second, then advancing to third on a fielder's choice.

The Hawks held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. Weston Meehan (Thomson, Ga.) started off the inning by reaching first on an error by the AMCATS third baseman, and then proceeded to second on a wild pitch. After Tony D'Addio (West Haven, Conn.) earned a walk, Austin Philips (Thomson, Ga.) delivered a bases-clearing triple into the left centerfield gap, scoring Meehan and D'Addio, giving the Hawks the 3-0 advantage.

The AMCATS threatened in the top of the eighth inning when they loaded the bases, but Tony Cantalupo (DePere, Wisc.) got John Sullivan (Southbury, Conn.) to strikeout looking with the bases load, preserving the 3-0 lead.

Anna Maria composed another threat in the top of the ninth inning.  Carlos Ortiz (Worcester, Mass.) led off the inning with a single, later scoring on sloppy Becker defense, cutting the Hawks advantage to 3-1.  Cantalupo got the potential tying run, Kevin Wodatch (Wallingford, Conn.) to ground out back to the mound, stranding Padraig Gilman (Leominster, Mass.) at second base. This sealed the 3-1 victory for the Hawks.

Anna Maria starter Zach Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.) took the loss after pitching six innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. Anna Maria (5-7) will return to action on Sunday, March 25 when they travel to Rivier College for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00pm.

Keon Jenkins earned the win for the Hawks after pitching seven and two-thirds innings, without allowing an earned run on three hits. Tony Cantalupo pitched the final inning and a third to earn his second save of the season. Becker (6-4) will travel to Mass. Maritime tomorrow, March 22 for a game with the Buccaneers at 3:30pm.
