AMCATS Split Doubleheader with Lasell

Worcester, Mass. – Anna Maria College split a double header with Lasell College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference baseball action today at Gaskill Field. AMC captured game one 4-2 but Lasell took the night cap 6-4. The AMCATS record now sits at 12-8, 4-1 GNAC while the Lasers are 8-14, 3-1 GNAC on the season.

GAME 1 – Anna Maria 4, Lasell 2

For the second time this season junior Kevin Wodatch (Wallingford, Conn.) led off the AMCAT's at-bats with a home run. Wodatch belted his fourth of the season over the right field fence to give AMC a 1-0 lead.

The advantage was short lived, Lasell took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Junior Jacob Salkovitz (Brockton, Mass.) delivered a single up the middle with one out to score Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, Mass.) and two batters later Cory Mitchell tripled to right center to score Salkovitz.

Junior Mike Gaurnieri (Wallingford, Conn.) singled to right center in the bottom of the third to score Kevin Wodatch and tie the game at two.

The teams traded scoreless fourth and fifth innings. Anna Maria took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Catcher John Sullivan (Southbury, Conn.) stepped to the plate with the bags full of AMCATS and delivered a 2 RBI single to left field for the 4-2 final.

Lasell's Kevin Post (Cromwell, Conn) pitched 6.0 innings surrendering 7 hits in the loss dropping his record to 1-3. Justin Hyland (Spencer, Mass.) pitched a complete game in the win and improves his record to 3-0 on the season.

GAME 2 – Anna Maria 4 Lasell 2

In game two, Lasell spotted the AMCATS 2 runs before exploding for 6 runs in the sixth inning for the win. Anna Maria scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Mike Gaurnieri scored on a sacrifice fly by Lucas Davis (Spencer, Mass.) and Justin Hyland had an RBI double in the fifth for the 2-0 lead.

In the sixth inning the Lasers capitalized on shaky defense by Anna Maria. Chris Pittman scored the first run for Lasell on a passed ball. With the bases loaded, Coach McNamara replaced starting pitcher Dean Diamantopoulos (Shrewsbury, Mass.) with freshman Brandon Normandin (Oxford, Mass.). Lasell's Cavanaugh immediately delivered an RBI single to right field to tie the game. The Lasers scored two more runs on an AMCAT error and Mitchell added 2 RBI's with a single to center field.

The AMCATS mounted a comeback scoring single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh but it wasn't enough and the 'CATS went down 6-4.

Senior Matt Pitts (Stoneham, Mass.) went the distance for the win.

Anna Maria returns to action on Thursday when they host Eastern Nazarene at Assumption College at 3:30 pm.
