AMCATS Run Ends In GNAC Tourney

East Providence, R.I. -- The fourth seeded Suffolk baseball squad advanced to the finals of the 2012 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship with a 15-2 win over third seeded Anna Maria at Pierce Field on Saturday afternoon.

Anna Maria took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by junior Mike Guarnieri (Wallingford, Conn.).  Suffolk knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third with an RBI double by sophomore Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.).  Suffolk broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth when a three run double by sophomore Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) made the score 4-1.  The Rams added three more in the fifth and tallied  three in the sixth, including a two-run home run by Jhonneris Mendez (Boston, Mass.) for the 10-1 advantage.  Suffolk would then cruise to the 15-2 victory.

Senior Jeff Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI in the loss for Anna Maria.

Junior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y,) was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for Suffolk while sophomore Jonathan Richard (North Reading, Mass.) notched the complete-game victory, allowing two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in nine innings of work for the Rams.

With the loss Anna Maria is now 22-16 while Suffolk improves to 20-21-1 for the year.  The Rams will return to action on Sunday, April 29th when they take on St. Joseph's of Maine in the finals of the tournament at Noon.
