Nighthawks Net Two to Top Women's Soccer, 2-0

PAXTON, Mass.—The Newbury College women's soccer team scored a goal in each half to take a 2-0 non-conference victory over the Anna Maria College AMCATS on Thursday evening.

With today's result, both teams now see their season records sit at 1-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The contest was scoreless for over half an hour until the Nighthawks scored in the 36th minute on a goal by Shannon Walsh (Massappequa, N.Y.). Newbury was busy in the first half as they outshot the AMCATS 12-6 and held a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

In the 64th minute, the AMCATS were awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the box, but Newbury goalkeeper Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) dove low to her left to stop the attempt by freshman Courtney Ryan (West Baldwin, Maine).

Newbury put the game out of reach in the 83rd minute as Walsh intercepted a pass in the AMCAT backfield and had an open look on the net for her second goal of the night.

The AMCATS outshot Newbury 8-6 in the second half.

GOALKEEPERS

AMCAT netminder Kate Kneeland (Windham, Maine) tallied 11 saves in defeat, while Sass recorded nine saves en route to her first victory of the season.

THE SERIES

Tonight's decision brings the series record between the two schools to 2-2-1. Entering tonight's game, Anna Maria had won the last two meetings.

WHAT'S NEXT

Anna Maria opens conference play on Saturday as they travel to Suffolk for a 1:00 p.m. start. Last season, the AMCATS posted a 1-0 double-overtime win against the Rams for their third win of the season.
