Women's Soccer Suffers 5-1 Loss to Rivier

PAXTON, Mass.—Senior Megan Caron (Tyngsboro, Mass.) netted a hat-trick to lead the Rivier University women's soccer team to a 5-1 win over the AMCATS of Anna Maria College on Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Raiders outshot the AMCATS 39-8 and scored all five of their goals before the AMCATS got in the board in the final minute of the game. The Raiders also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

 SCORING

After a scoreless 19 minutes, River got on the board at the 19:21 mark when Colby Creteau (Nashua, N.H.) fired a perfect corner kick to a waiting Caron positioned right in front of the net. Caron one-touched it to the bottom right corner for her first score of the day.

Less than two minutes later, Caron added a second tally as she was fed from the right side of the field by Jane Farrell (Wilmington, Mass.). A few dribbles gave Caron an open look on net.

The score remained unchanged for the remainder of the half. In the 51st minute, the Raiders took a 3-0 lead as Maggie Cahoon (Derry, N.H.) fired from the left corner of the six-yard box.

Twenty-two minutes later Cahoon scored again as she collected a through-ball from Caron at the 30-yard line and carried it herself for 15 yards before shooting to the near left post.

In the 82nd minute Caron completed the hat-trick as she took the ball off an AMCAT defender just inside the 20-yard box and fired it into the opposite corner.

In the 90th minute, Ashley Bottis (Rutland, Mass.) crossed a ball in from the end line to the waiting head of Courtney Ryan (West Baldwin, Maine), who tapped it in for her second goal of the season.

GOALKEEPERS

Junior Kate Kneeland (Windham, Maine) tallied 22 saves in net for the AMCATS. Lauren Goodspeed (Merrimack, N.H.) made five saves in the victory for Rivier.

The win marks the second in-a-row for Rivier in the series against Anna Maria to improve to 5-1 all-time. Anna Maria's lone win was recorded in 2014 and was the first GNAC win in program history for the AMCATS.
