Men’s Ice Hockey Falls To Nichols In Shootout Thriller

WORCESTER, MA: The Anna Maria College men's ice hockey team had their second overtime shootout in as many games in the Woo Cup Championship Final at Fidelity Worcester Ice Center on Sunday evening, as they were edged by Nichols College in the shootout after a 3-3 tie.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Anna Maria struck first as junior right wing Michael Padgeon (Sellersville, PA) started things off 2:30 in the second period as he scored his first goal of the season with assists to senior defenseman Jonathan Fowler (Tewksbury, MA) and junior defenseman Cam Tobey (Falmouth, MA).
  • The AMCATS went up 2-0 with 4:21 to go in the second when freshman Wolter Colby (Falun, AB) scored his second goal of the season on an unassisted shot.
  • In the third period, the Bison exploded out of the gate with three goals in sixteen minutes, capitalizing on a pair of power plays to get sophomore forward Quinn McCarthy (Dorchester, MA), sophomore forward Dylan McMahon (Katana, Ontaio) and freshman forward Nathan Carl (Sherwood Park, AB) all found the back of the AMCAT net to give Nichols a 3-2 lead.
  • With seconds ticking down for Anna Maria, the AMCATS once again turned to Colby, who scored a miracle shot with 12 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
  • The AMCATS outshot the Bison 7-2 in the overtime, but couldn't find the game winner. The game ended in a tie, with the Woo Cup Championship determined by shootout. Anna Maria missed on all three shootout attempts, giving Nichols the 1-0 decision.
  • Anna Maria senior goalkeeper Julius Huset (Oakdale, MN) finished with 24 saves for the AMCATS, while Nichols junior goalkeeper            Korbinian Lutz (Munchen, Germany) had 26.
  • Anna Maria senior center Quinn Tucker (Hancock, NH) was named to the Woo Cup All-Tournament Team.
