Men’s Ice Hockey Prevails Over Greyhounds In Opening Night Shootout Thriller

WORCESTER, MA : The Anna Maria College men's ice hockey team opened their 2021-2022 season with a 3-3 shootout win against Assumption College in the first round of the Worcester Cup Tournament on Friday evening at the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center in Worcester. The AMCATS won the shootout after a five-minute overtime, 3-2, advancing to Sunday's championship final.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Anna Maria senior right winger Gavin Proeh (Highland Park, IL) scored the first AMCAT goal of the season just 3:04 into the game, assisted by senior left winger Patrick Manning (Messena, NY). Poeh was Anna Maria's third leading scorer two years ago during the team's last full season.
  • Anna Maria freshman right winger Matthew Byrne (Penticton, BC) made it 2-1 at 10:51 into the game with his first career goal, assisted by junior left-side defenseman Cam Tobey (Falmouth, MA) and sophomore center August Bouveng (Nynashamns, Sweden).
  • Anna Maria freshman right winger Wolter Colby (Falun, AB) scored his first career goal to give the AMCATS a 3-2 lead with 3:48 to go in the first, assisted by freshman right-side defenseman Justin Taylor (Hammonds Plains, NS).
  • In the shootout round, Anna Maria sophomore center Guillaume Coulombe (Ste-Julie, QC), sophomore left winger Lukas Radina (Horazdovice, CZ) and senior left winger Jack Sitzman (Redondo Beach, CA) each scored a shootout goal to give the AMCATS a 3-2 lead.
  • Anna Maria senior netminder Julius Huset (Oakdale, MN) stopped 43-of-46 shots on the night, then defended three of the five Assumption shootout shots.

Anna Maria will be back on the ice on Sunday when they play in the Worcester City Championship Game. Puck-drop is scheduled for 6:50 p.m.
