Men’s Basketball Open Season By Sinking Mariners

PAXTON, MA: The Anna Maria College men's basketball team opened their 2022-23 season when they welcomed the Mitchell College Mariners to the Fuller Activities Center on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS:

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The AMCATS trailed for a total of 11 seconds in this game. Mikey Buscetto hit a three-point basket with 7:11 to go in the first half to give the Mariners their only lead of the game, 26-25. 11 seconds later junior forward Gabe Armstead (Dallas, GA) responded with a layup to put the AMCATS back in front and ignited a 20-7 run over the final seven minutes of the first half to send the teams into the half-time locker rooms with the AMCATS ahead 45-33. The Mariners wouldn't get the lead to less than eight for the remainder of the game.
  • Armstead tied with Buscetto with a game-high 18 points while also contributing 11 rebounds and two assists. The game was Armstead's sixth career double-double and first since he put up 20 and 12 against Emmanuel on February 15th of last season.
  • Sophomore guard Sean Zabari (Miami, FL) and graduate student guard Kennedy Minix-Rogers each missed a double-double by a single rebound. Zabari scored 14 points while Minix-Rogers scored 11. Minix-Rogers also tied with Buscetto with a game-high six assists.
  • Freshman guard Ray Carter Jr. (East Longmeadow, MA) had 12 points in just 16 minutes in his first collegiate game.
  • The AMCATS shot 40% from beyond the arc, going 6-15 from three-point land.
  • The AMCATS also did their jobs at the charity stripe, making 16 of their 19 free throws, good for 84.2% versus the Mariners' 8-15, 53.3% effort.
