Women’s Volleyball Drops Four-Setter To Monks

PAXTON, MA : The Anna Maria College women's volleyball team fell in four sets to visiting Saint Joseph's College of Maine in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Tuesday evening in Paxton.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Tuesday, October 12, 2021
  • Score: Saint Joseph's College of Maine 3, Anna Maria 1 (29-27, 13-25, 28-26, 25-11)
  • Records: Monks of St. Joseph's 7-13, 4-2 GNAC | AMCATS of Anna Maria 5-13, 1-6 GNAC

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the first set, the AMCATS were facing set point at 24-23 when Anna Maria sophomore setter Julia Tarantino (Pembroke, MA) put down a dump-kill to keep her team alive and push the set into the extras. The Monks eventually took the set with a kill by senior middle blocker Sarah Quinn (Dover, NH).
  • In the second set, Anna Maria took control behind the serving of junior middle blocker Ashley Sheehan (Medford, MA). The AMCATS coasted and finally took it off a kill by sophomore outside hitter Sarah Burt (Plymouth, MA).
  • The third set was another nail-biter, with Anna Maria holding set point and the serve with a 25-24 lead. But St. Joe's freshman Sierra Burns (Peyton, CO) put down a kill and the Monks would pull away in extras.
  • The fourth and final set saw a dominating serving performance by Burns. Down 8-7 when the ball was put in her hands, the rookie held serve on 18 straight rallies, bringing the Monks to the precipice of victory.
  • Quinn excelled for Saint Joseph's, with 18 kills, a .378 hitting percentage, and 13 digs.
  • Tarantino led Anna Maria with seven kills, 17 set assists and nine digs. Junior middle blocker Ryann Hassett (North Oxford, MA) posted five kills and two solo blocks.
  • Junior libero Serena Dennis (Holyoke, MA) led the AMCAT defense with 17 digs, while senior outside hitter Jenna Grande (Whitman, MA) added 13.
  • St. Joe's junior setter Hanna Holden (Stoughton, MA) set the table for the Monks, with 45 set assists and ten digs.
  • Anna Maria's win in the second set was their first set win over Saint Joseph's since November 1, 2016, a five set win for the AMCATS in the GNAC quarterfinals.
