Lancers Too Much For Women’s Volleyball

PAXTON, MA : The Anna Maria College women's volleyball team lost in four sets to visiting Worcester State University in a non-conference matchup of crosstown county rivals on Thursday evening in Paxton.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Thursday, October 14, 2021
  • Score: Worcester State 3, Anna Maria 1 (22-25, 25-10, 25-22, 25-21)
  • Records: Lancers of Worcester State (7-12) | AMCATS of Anna Maria (5-14)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the first set, the AMCATS trailed 20-19 before rallying down the stretch, with Anna Maria sophomore outside hitter Sarah Burt (Plymouth, MA) putting it away with a service ace.
  • After the Lancers rallied to take the second set in dominating fashion, the AMCATS took a 12-7 lead in the third behind a pair of kills from junior outside hitter Bella Kozciak (Westfield, MA). But it would be Worcester State finding the answer down the stretch, winning five of the last seven rallies.
  • In the fourth set, Anna Maria once again jumped out to an early lead, but couldn't overcome a series of errors down the stretch.
  • Worcester State senior outside hitter Natalie Gillis (Ashland, MA) proved to be the difference for much of the night, with 25 kills and an impressive .340 hitting percentage to go along with 21 digs.
  • Anna Maria junior middle blocker Ashley Sheehan (Medford, MA) had one of her best matches of the season with six kills and five service aces.
  • Anna Maria sophomore setter Julia Tarantino (Pembroke, MA) finished with 22 set assists, eight kills and 15 digs.
  • Worcester State first year Angela Colonis (Waterford, CT) finished with 11 kills, 26 set assists, seven digs and two aces.
  • Anna Maria's first set win is the first over Worcester State since the 2016 season.
