Sama Scores Career-High 18 Points vs. Suffolk University

PAXTON, Mass. (01.23.13) –Junior Liz Sama (Winsor, Conn.) scored a career-high 18 points for the Anna Maria College women's  basketball in a 78-38 loss to visiting conference foe Suffolk University at The Fuller Activities Center on Wednesday night. The AMCATS now drop to 4-14 overall and 0-5 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), while the Rams improve to 13-4 on the year and a perfect 5-0 in conference play.

Sama's stat sheet read 6-for-17 shooting, knocking down 5 shots from downtown and a free-throw for her 18 points.  Junior Kayla Cummings (Auburn, ME) added seven points, three rebounds and three steals, while senior Alison McCarthy (Lynn, MA) contributed 5 points and 4 rebounds.

Suffolk had a pair of players in double figures. Senior Jacqueline Vienneau (Salem, NH) knocked down 6-of-9 shots from the floor for a team-high 15 points, while teammate Jennifer Ruys  (Wallingford, Conn.) added 12 points, 6 rebounds and two assists in twenty minutes of play.
The Rams got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 15-5 lead as Ruys scored six of her ten first-half points in the run. Anna Maria responded with a free throw from senior Brooke Denver (New Britain, Conn.) and a beyond-the-arc basket by guard Katie Pryor (Whitinsville, MA) to cut the lead to 18-9 with 12:01 to play in the first half.
Suffolk maintained the offensive pressure the remainder of the half and outscored AMC 16-8 down the stretch to take a 34-17 advantage into intermission. The Rams shot an impressive 55.6% on 15-for-27 shooting in the first stanza while Anna Maria could only connect on 6-of-23 (26.1%). Suffolk's Ruys and Vienneau lead all scorers with 10 first half points each.
The Rams came out of the break to score the opening nine points of the second half, stretching their lead to 26. Liz Sama's three-point play at the 17:03 mark, cut the deficit to 43-20, unfortunately it was as close as Anna Maria would get the rest of the night. The Rams pulled away outscoring the AMCATS by a 35-18 margin over the final minutes to secure the 78-38 victory.
The Rams finished the game shooting 58.6% to the AMCATS 23.6%, they also dominated on the boards outrebound AMC 48-23.
The AMCATS' return to action on Monday when they travel to Simmons College for a 2:00pm matinee, while Suffolk  host GNAC rival Emerson on Saturday at 1:00pm.
