Cummings Drops Double-Double, AMCATS Bested by Nighthawks

WENHAM, MA— On day two of the Gordon College Tip-Off Tournament, the Nighthawks of Newbury College bested the Anna Maria AMCATS, 50-46, in the consolation game to improve to 1-1 overall on the year. The loss drops Anna Maria to 0-2.

The game proved to be close as both teams battled for the lead throughout the first half. Standout play from Kayla Cummings (Jr./Auburn, Maine) with eight points and nine boards and Katie Pryor (So./Whitinsville, Mass.) with eight points of her own was not enough for the AMCATS, as Newbury headed to the locker room with a 26-24 lead behind eight points from Nicole Silva (Sr./Berkley, Mass.).

The battle continued throughout the second half with both teams pressuring for the lead. Despite forcing 15 Nighthawk turnovers to only seven of their own in the second half, the AMCATS' efforts were not enough in the end, as Newbury buckled down on defense to preserve the 50-46 victory.

Leading the Nighthawks to the win was Silvia with 13 points and eight boards, while Kwanasia Fredricks (Jr./Harlem, N.Y.) chipped in nine points and four rebounds.

AMC's Cummings finished the afternoon with a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double, while Pryor added 12 points, five boards and four steals.

The Nighthawks return to action on Monday, Nov. 19 as they travel to take on New England College at 5:30p.m., while Anna Maria hosts Elms College on the same night at 7:00p.m.
