AMCATS Fall to Blazers, 76-56

Paxton, Mass. – The Anna Maria women's basketball team fell to the visiting Elms College Blazers 76-56 in non-conference action tonight at Fuller Activities Center. The Blazers' picked up their first win of the season to move to 1-2 and the AMCATS remain winless at 0-3.

Anna Maria had three players in double figures, sophomore Katie Pryor (Whitinsville, Mass.) notched 12 points and seniors Alison McCarthy (Lynn, Mass.) and Chelsea Blair (Holland, Mass) each had 10 points apiece. Pryor had a team high 8 rebounds while Blair grabbed 7 boards.

The Blazers were led by Denisha Parks' (Fall River, Mass.) tremendous night, the sophomore tossed in a game high 30 points on 12 of 17 shooting and pulled down 16 rebounds in 31 minutes. Freshman guard Jenna Oyler (Metuchen, NJ) scored 13 points and added 6 assists off the bench.

Anna Maria and Elms traded basket much of the first half of the open stanza. An opening three by Kaitlyn Patno (Lunenburg, Mass.) and good jumper by Kayla Cummings tied the game at 5-5. A pair of free throws at 13:07 by Alison McCarthy gave the AMCATS the 11-9 lead, but Elms responded with a Parks 3-point play to move ahead 12-11.

Junior guard Liz Sama (Windsor, Conn.) hit an outside jumper at 11:08 to give the AMCATS a 13-12 advantage; however it would be the last lead for AMC. Elms' Oyler hit a three pointer from the corner and after a defensive stop and a Parks basket the Blazers held a 20-16 lead. Anna Maria would bounce back again with a try from McCarty and a two from Cumming to cut the lead to 22-21 with 5:52 remaining in the first half.  The Blazers closed out the first half with a 17-6 outburst to take a 39-27 lead into the locker room.

Anna Maria opened up the second half with a steal and a McCarthy basket to make it a 10 point game, unfortunately the Blazers would explode for 10 straight points with five points from Nicolette Martin and Parks to push the lead to 20 points at 49-29 at the 16:57 mark. Anna Maria couldn't bounce back from the deficit and the final was 76-56.

Anna Maria returns to action after the Thanksgiving break when they travel to New England College on Sunday afternoon for a 2pm contest. Elms' will next hit the hardwood on Wednesday November 28th when they host Suffolk University at 7:00 pm.
