Field Hockey Falls to WPI, 2-0

WORCESTER, Mass. --- Mary-Lee Barboza (Rochester, Mass.) and Grace Davis (Sandwich, Mass.) both scored first half goals to lead host WPI past Anna Maria, 2-0, in a non-conference field hockey contest Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

With the win, the Engineers improve to 9-4 while the AMCATS fall to 9-8.

Barboza capitalized on a penalty corner when she tipped in a feed from Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, Conn.) to give the Crimson and Gray a 1-0 lead at 13:13. With less than five minutes to play before the break, Davis lifted a pass from Jena Mazzucco (Danbury, Conn.) over the AMCAT defense and goaltender for the 2-0 advantage.

Shannon Rice (Bath, Maine), and Shevchuk joined Barboza and Davis with one shot-on-goal apiece for the hosts as Nichole Lowe (Saugus, Mass.), Nicole Denver (Springfield, Mass.) and Kylie Dalbec (Portland, Maine) each took aim for the AMCATS.

WPI netminder Lauren Puishys (Oxford, Mass.) stopped all the shots she faced while Anna Maria goaltender Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, N.H.) posted a pair of saves.

As a team, the Engineers took nine of the 17 shots in the game and held a commanding 9-2 margin in penalty corners.

WPI plays the fourth contest of a five-game home stand on Tuesday, hosting nationally-ranked Mount Holyoke at 4:30pm.  Anna Maria plays the final of three straight non-conference games on Thursday, entertaining Bay Path at 4pm.
