Volleyball Falls 3-0 in Match with WPI

THE BASICS:

Score: WPI 3, Anna Maria College 0

Records: WPI (1-3), Anna Maria College (3-1)

Location: Worcester, Mass. (Harrington Auditorium)

The Lead: WPI freshman Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, NH) led all student-athletes with 16 kills and two block assists to help lead the Engineers into the win column with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-14) decision over visiting Anna Maria College Wednesday night in Harrington Auditorium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-Senior Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, MA) added eight swipes to go with six each by classmate Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, FL) and junior Casey Hunt (Granby, CT). Junior Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, MA) narrowly missed her fourth consecutive double-double with 36 of WPI's 39 assists and nine digs, as well as four aces. Junior Victoria Nassar (Salem, NH) registered 13 digs as Hunt and senior Ann Kaczowka (Seekonk, MA) accounted for eight apiece.

-Sarah Lathrop (Waterford, Conn.) was the only other student-athlete with double-digit kills with a dozen while Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.) compiled seven swipes. Tierney Clancy (Meriden, Conn.) and Kerri Earle (Bethel, Conn.) combined for the 20 helpers with 14 and six, respectively. Carolina Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) came up with nine of the AMCATS 30 digs.

-Late in the first set, Bakhtyari made it 20-15 with a kill. She then served up an aces that sandwiched another WPI kill, this time by Klepper. A miscue temporarily halted the momentum as a service miscue doubled as set point. Hunt's ace then ended it 25-16.

-The second set was relatively close until a pair of kills by Hunt for the 19-14 advantage. The teams then traded points before and after a pair of AMCAT miscues for the 23-16 cushion. Wetmore delivered the decisive swipe two serves later.

-An 8-0 run early in the third set gave WPI the 15-5 upper hand. Despite being down 24-12, Anna Maria staved off two match points thanks to an Engineer miscue and a kill by Lathrop. Wetmore ended the match with an assist by Bahktyari.
