Anna Maria Soars to 3-0 Victory over Falcons

THE BASICS:

-Score: Anna Maria College 3, Fitchburg State University 0 (24-15, 25-11, 25-14)

-Records: Anna Maria College (3-0), Fitchburg State University (0-1)

-Location: Paxton, Mass. (Fuller Activities Center)

- The Lead: The Anna Maria College women's volleyball team swept the visiting Falcons of Fitchburg State University, 3-0 on Tuesday evening. Sophomore, Sarah Lathrop (Waterford, Conn.) led the team with 11 kills on the night.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-The AMCATS won match one by a final score of 25-14. The Falcons opened up scoring with the first point from a serving error by the AMCATS. Anna Maria was then able to score four unanswered points to tak a 4-1 lead. The visitors tied the score at 5-5 on a kill from Nicole Sylvester (Everett, Mass.), but they were never able to gain the lead. The AMCATS went on to score six unanswered points to take an 11-5 lead. Following an AMCAT block by freshmen Abygail Chapdelain (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Lathrop, Chapdelain posted back to back kills to give the AMCATS the 23-13 lead. The Falcons were able to tally one more point on a serving error by the home team, but the AMCATS took the ultimate 25-14 victory.

-Anna Maria took match two by a final score of 25-11. Fitchburg took their first lead of the night following a kill by Kathryn McGroarty (Quincy,Mass.) (5-4). That was the last lead they would see in the match as Anna Maria went on to take the victory.

-The Falcons came out strong in match three. They scored five unanswered points before the AMCATS came back to life. Anna Maria responded to the visitor's rally with a nine-point rally of their own to take a 9-6 lead. Fitchburg tied the game up 9-9 with a kill by Jessica Pierce (Brentwood, N.H.) and a set error by the AMCATS. The home team held on to the lead for the remainder of the match and clinched the 3-0 victory with a 25-14 final victory in match three.

 

BEHIND THE NUMBERS:

- Lathrop led the AMCATS with 11 kills while senior, Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.) notched nine kills of her own to lift the AMCATS over the Falcons. Tierney Clancy (Meriden, Conn.) earned a game high 21 assists.

-Sylvester and Lauren Riccaardi (Tewksbury, Mass.) both notched four kills for the visitors. McGroarty posted a team high seven assists and Pierce had a game high 12 digs.

 

UP NEXT:

The AMCATS travel to WPI on Wednesday, Sept. 6th for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference match. The Falcons host Becker College on Thursday Sept. 7th at 7:00 p.m.
