Worcester State Tops Volleyball, 3-0

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 loss to the Lancers of Worcester State University on Thursday evening in non-conference action from the Fuller Activities Center.

With the loss, the AMCATS fall to 11-11 on the season, while the win boosts the Lancers to 18-4.

Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, Mass.) posted a double-double of 13 kills and 12 assists en route to the 25-18, 25-21, 25-18 win.

In addition to Jasper, the Lancers were led offensively by Jennifer Cabral (Swansea, Mass.) with seven kills, and Meghan Deighan (Lynnfield, Mass.) with six. Defensively, the Lancers saw a match-high 19 kills from libero Kaylee Leduc (Swansea, Mass.) and two blocks by Amanda Lewis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), who also dished out 28 assists.

Anna Maria was led by freshman Telliah Bursie (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) with nine kills. Junior Jessica Goulet (Lawrence, Mass.) added seven kills and three blocks. Setter Samantha Parker (Athol, Mass.) dished out 22 assists and also recorded 10 digs. Senior Jacqueline Clinton (Walpole, Mass.) recorded a team-best 16 digs.

Anna Maria scored the first point of the match, but Worcester State rattled off the next seven points to take an early 7-1 lead. The AMCATS would begin to chip away at the deficit and eventually would come within one point at 13-12 following a kill by Goulet. The Lancers would respond with a three-point run, and they maintained the margin for the remainder of the opening set.

The AMCATS fought hard in game two, as they forced six lead changes and seven ties before the Lancers broke open a 16-16 tie by winning back-to-back points. The AMCATS would come within one again at 18-17, but a three-point streak for WSU would put the game out of reach for Anna Maria.

Anna Maria led for a majority of the third game, opening a six-point gap at 16-10 before Worcester State's Ali Remigio (Tewksbury, Mass.) served three-straight points to cut the AMCATS' lead in half. Anna Maria tallied their 17th point on a Worcester State service error, but they could not maintain possession of the serve, and Lewis served three-straight points to bring the Lancers within one at 18-17.

The Lancers would see the score evened at 18-18 on an Anna Maria service error and would not look back, rallying off the final seven points on the serving strength of Jasper.

Worcester State totaled 35 kills and made 14 errors in 117 attempts for a .179 hitting percentage. The ACMATS posted a .041 hitting percentage and totaled 29 kills and 24 errors in 123 attempts.

Anna Maria will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Albertus Magnus College in a 10:00 a.m. Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match. The Lancers will take on Framingham State at WPI on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
