AMCATS Suffer 55-53 Setback to Lasell

PAXTON, Mass. (01.28.12) – The Lady AMCATS suffered a 55-53 loss to Lasell College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's basketball action today at The Fuller Activities Center. With the loss, AMC drops to 5-14 (1-7 GNAC) on the season while Lasell picks up a crucial conference win and improves to 3-15 (3-5 GNAC).

Anna Maria had three players in double-digits. Guard Liz Sama (Windsor, Conn.) scored 11 points, senior Samantha Ashton (Worcester, Mass.) chipped in 10 points while Chelsea Blair (Holland, Mass) had a game high 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Freshman Kayla Cummings (Auburn, Maine) came off the bench and grabbed 8 rebounds.

Lasell was led by Kim Arcchibald's (Lewiston, Maine) double-double, the junior forward netted 14 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Danielle Auntencio (Montville, Conn.) had a game high 15 rebounds, 9 points and 2 blocks. Coming off the bench Kayla Vincelette (Westport, Mass.) poured in 10 points.

The Lady AMCATS opened the game with a 9-2 run. Sam Ashton scored the game's first six points and Liz Sama drained a three pointer and Anna Maria held a seven point advantage. The Lasers battled back and when Kim Arcchibald hit a jumper at the 9:22 mark, Lasell had their first lead of the game at 15-13.

The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes. AMC senior Amanda Heavy tossed in a three pointer at 4:06 and Anna Maria had extended their lead to five points at 26-21. Lasell responded with baskets by Justin Ryan (Norwood, Mass.), Kayla Vincelette and Alexis Chappell (Springfield, Mass.) and the game was tied for the fourth time in the half at 28.

However, sophomore guard Liz Sama hit a layup as time expired in the half as the AMCATS took a slim 30-28 lead into the locker room.

Sam Ashton put in a layup to open up the second half with a 32-28 advantage for the AMC. Once again Lasell responded with a three point play by Alexis Chappell and a free throw by Kayla Vincelette to tie the game at 32-32. A second free throw by Vincelette gave the Lasers a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

AMC's Sama hit from behind the arc at 12:14 to tie the game at 39-39 and Chelsea Blair hit a free throw at 5:15 to tie the game at 49-49 and another at 1:36 to tie the game at 53-53 but Anna Maria could never forge into the lead.

Lasell junior Kim Archibald scored a layup with 1:19 remaining to seal the 55-53 victory for the Lasers.

Anna Maria returns to action on Tuesday night when they host non-conference opponent Trinity at 7:00 pm.
