Lady AMCATS Clawed by Falcons

PAXTON, Mass. – Led by Amy Fahey's (Wilmington, Mass) and Rebecca Goreham's (Quincy, Mass.) double-doubles, the Fitchburg State University women's basketball team defeated Anna Maria College 75-58 at The Fuller Activities Center in non-conference action on Tuesday night.  The win keeps the Falcons undefeated at 11-0, while the loss drops the AMCATS to 4-7 on the season.

For the visitors, Fahey was 10 for 21 from the field for 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds (11 defensive), while Goreham added 14 points and a game high 17 rebounds (13 defensive) and Laura Cote (Ashby, Mass.) filled the stat-sheet with 12 points, three steals, and three assists.

Samantha Ashton (Worcester, Mass.), Alison McCarthy (Lynn, Mass) and Katie Pryor (Whitinsville, Mass) all played well for the AMCATS. Ashton recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while McCarthy chipped in with 12 points and Pryor added 8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and four steals.

The Falcons took a quick 7-0 lead, capped by a Laura Cote three pointer at the 16:04 mark of the first half. AMC's Katie Pryor scored the next 5 points to cut the lead to 7-5. Fitchburg State went on a 17-3 run to take a commanding 24-8 lead with just over 6 minutes remaining in the half. Goreham contributed 6 points in the run.

The AMCATS refuse to go quietly Sam Ashton quickly hit back to back jumpers, a couple of free throws and a layup to end the half as AMC finished the first half on a 13-6 run to cut the lead to 30-21 at intermission.

Once again the Falcons took a double digit lead after a Madison Marek (New Ipswich, NH) layup FSU was up 13 points at 39-26. The Lady AMCATS responded with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 39-36. During the run, four different players contributed on the stat sheet, Kayla Cummings added four points and Alison McCarthy hit a trey.

Over the next ten minutes the teams traded baskets and it was still a three point game at 53-50 with 7:58 remaining in the game but the AMCATS couldn't keep pace any longer and Fitchburg extended the lead after a Laura Cote three pointer and a Meaghan Secino jumper and the Falcons cruised to their eleventh straight win.

Both teams return to action on Saturday afternoon, as Anna Maria travels to Pine Manor at 1:00 pm and the Falcons host Bridgewater State at 1:00 pm.
