Women’s Basketball Suffers 53-40 loss to Rams

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University women's basketball team opened the game with a 9-0 run and never looked back as they defeated the Anna Maria College AMCATS 53-40 this evening in non-conference women's basketball action.

With the win, the Rams improve to 6-2 on the year, while the AMCATS fall to 4-6.

The Rams jumped out to a quick 9-0 behind a pair of three pointers from freshman guard Nicole Bostic (North Easton, Mass.) and a trifecta from junior forward Kia Minor (Edgartown, Mass.).  Framingham State capitalized on Anna Maria's poor shooting in the opening minutes as the AMCATS started 0-for-6 from the floor and did not score their first field goal, a Chelsea Blair (Holland, Mass.) jumper from just outside the paint, until the 14:22 mark.

Anna Maria struggled from the floor throughout the first half as they connected on just 4-of their first-24 attempts from the field (16.7%) allowing the Rams to build a 27-9 lead with 3:13 left in the frame.  The Rams shot 46% from three point range in the first half and four of their first five field goals in the game came from behind the arc.  Bostic connected on 2-of-4 from long range in the first 20 minutes for 10 first half points, while senior Jill Johnson (Mansfield, Mass.) came off the bench to go 2-of-2 from behind the arc giving the Rams a 34-11 lead at the break.

The Rams extended their lead to 45-16 in the opening minutes of the second half, but Anna Maria would not go away quietly as they connected on six second half threes and converted 13 second half Ram turnovers into 12 points.  The Rams, however, were able to withstand the AMCATS in the second half and sealed the victory.

Sophomore guard Kristen Hoffman (Foxboro, Mass.) led a balanced Rams attack with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor including 3-of-5 from behind the arc to go along with six boards, four assists and six steals.  Bostic finished the game with 10 points, three caroms, five assists and three steals.  Minor chipped in eight points and shared team-high rebounding honors with junior Michelle Hagerty (Somerville, Mass.) as each grabbed seven boards, while senior Emily Clark (Melrose, Mass.) finished with seven points and six boards.

The AMCATS were led by senior guard Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, Mass.) who scored a game-high 16 points including four three pointers, while classmate Samantha Ashton (Worcester, Mass.) chipped in nine points.  Senior forward Mary Moroski (Worcester, Mass.) had a solid game on the boards for the AMCATS as she grabbed a game-high 10 caroms.

The Rams held a 22-8 advantage in points in the paint for the game and held a 49-38 advantage on the glass.  The AMCATS warmed up from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting 25% (14-57), while the Rams shot 34% from the field (21-61) and 40% from behind the arc (6-13).

The Rams close out first semester action tomorrow night with a non-conference game against Johnson and Wales University at 6 p.m., while the AMCATS are off until January 3rd when they host Fitchburg State University at 5:30 p.m.
