Lady AMCATS drop fifth straight

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (January 21, 2012) – Lianna Carrero (Hamden, Conn.) scored 23 points to lead the Albertus Magnus women's basketball team to their 10th victory of the season with a 76-65 win over Anna Maria on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action.

Carrero shot 10-of-13 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line to lead the Falcons in their second-straight win.

The AMCATS were led by Samantha Ashton's double-double, the senior guard scored 20 points and snatched 10 rebounds and Alison McCarthy's season high 18 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three point range. Junior Brooke Denver was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line scoring 10 points in the loss.

Albertus improves to 10-6 with the win, while the Falcons' record evens out to 3-3 in the GNAC standings. Anna Maria drops to 5-12 overall and 1-5 in league play with the loss. Albertus is now 7-4 all-time against the AMCATS dating back to the 1998-99 season.

Lindsay Karle (Wallingford, Conn.) tallied 19 points for her third-straight game with 10 or more points, while Bianca Brown (West Haven, Conn.) added 21 points and six rebounds.

The Falcons opened today's contest with a 17-6 run in the first six minutes of play, led by Karle as she hit 2-of-2 from behind the arc. Albertus went on to take their largest lead of the frame at the 10:41 mark as the Falcons went up by 17. Both Karle and Brown led the Falcons at the break with 15 points, while Carrero tallied nine points and five rebounds in the frame.

Anna Maria shot 36.4-percent in the first half, led by 10 points from Samantha Ashton (Worcester, Mass.), who shot 5-of-8 from the field. The AMCATS outscored the Falcons 34-30 in the second half but the Falcons held on and shot 47.5-percent from the floor on the afternoon.

Albertus edged the AMCATS in rebounding as they pulled down 41 compared to Anna Maria's 37. Sarah Boudreau (Pascoag, R.I.) came away with 10 rebounds in 26 minutes of work, while adding four points for Albertus.

For the AMCATS, today's loss was their fifth-straight, while it was also their eighth loss in their last nine games.

The AMCATS return to action next Thursday when they travel to Norwich for a 5:30 pm tip-off.
