Simmons Tops Field Hockey, 1-0

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Sharks of Simmons College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at AMCAT Field.

With the loss, the AMCATS fall to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in GNAC play, while the win boosts the Sharks to 4-3 overall and 2-0 against GNAC competition.

The Sharks' game-winning goal was scored in the 14th minute. Mary Neidhardt (Middlefield, Conn.) took a point-blank shot from the right side which bounced off Anna Maria goaltender Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, N.H.). The rebounded landed right on Amy Cronin's (Georgetown, Mass.) stick, and she took a commanding shot past Breen for her third goal of the season.

The Sharks dominated the game offensively, as they outshot the AMCATS 21-6, including 11 second-half shots. Breen had a busy day in net for the AMCATS as she totaled 13 saves.

The Sharks had another opportunity to score in the 58th minute, as Simmons' Samantha Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.) took a shot that beat Breen, but Anna Maria's Sarah Bess (West Barnstable, Mass.) picked up a big defensive save and tossed the shot out of play.  

Simmons netminder Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) recorded two saves on the afternoon. Both of Anna Maria's shots-on-goal were taken by sophomore Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, Mass.) early in the second half.

The AMCATS return to action on Tuesday, September 23rd for a non-conference game at Clark University.
