Field Hockey Falls to Wheaton 5-1 Despite 22-18 Advantage in Shots

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College field hockey team received goals from five different scorers to produce a 5-1 non-conference victory over Anna Maria College on Tuesday night at Nordin Field.

Wheaton senior co-captain Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) opened up the scoring for the Blue and White at the 9:09 mark as she finished a pass from sophomore Amelia Gage (Lebanon, N.H.) from the top of the circle for a 1-0 advantage. Gage followed with her own tally at 20:27, while Darci Bruce (Walpole, Mass.), Sarah McNicholas (Concord, Mass.)and Kelsey Harris (Spencer, Mass.) all found the back of the cage in the second half.

Anna Maria senior forward Nichole Lowe (Saugus, Mass.) scored the AMCATS lone goal at 26:47 on a beautiful feed by junior Kayla Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) from across the right side of the circle to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

Before Wheaton's three-goal outburst in the second half, Lyons' senior goalkeeper Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass.) was the difference for the hosts as she stopped 11 shots including nine in the second stanza. Anna Maria goalkeeper Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, N.H.) made nine saves in the loss.

The AMCATS held a 22-18 differential in shots, while Wheaton fashioned a 9-6 margin in penalty corners. Anna Maria junior midfielder Kylie Dalbec (Portland, Maine) led all student-athletes with 12 shots (eight on goal).

Wheaton (2-1) travels to Regis College on Friday for a non-conference matchup at 4 p.m. Anna Maria (1-1) hosts Eastern Connecticut State on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Lyons are now 4-0 in the all-time series against the AMCATS which dates back to 2011.
