Lady AMCATS Swept in Tri-Match

Paxton, Mass. – Anna Maria College hosted a volleyball tri-match today at Fuller Activities Center with Eastern Nazarene College and Daniel Webster College. Eastern Nazarene went 2-0, while Daniel Webster split (1-1) and the AMCATS were swept (0-2) on the day.

Eastern Nazarene 3, Anna Maria 1 (25-10, 25-21, 20-25, 25-17)

Sophomore Samantha Parker (Athol, Mass.) led the Anna Maria offense with 23 assists and sophomore Jessica Goulet (Lawrence, Mass.) collected 15 kills but it wasn't enough as the Lions outlasted the AMCATS in four sets.  Anna Maria had three players in double digits for digs, Samantha Parker (10), Alex Rodriguez (Puerto Rico) (11), and Jessica Goulet had a match high 19 total digs.

Eastern Nazarene was led by freshman Lauryl Berger's (Laurel, DE) 37 assists and Dana Day's (Coarsegold, CA) 13 kills.  Eastern Nazarene cruised to an early 1-0 lead by scoring a 25-10 win in game one.  The second game was a back and forth battle.  With the game tied at 16 the Lions had an offensive outburst, going on a 7-1 run to lead 23-17.  After an AMCAT timeout, they were able to score four straight points, cutting the score to 23-21.  A couple of late AMCAT miscues put the end to the comeback and gave the Lions the 25-21 win.

The AMCATS chipped away at the Lions lead, taking game 3 by a score of 25-20. Freshman Demi Carrero (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) notched 3 of her 5 service aces in the game.  Another tight battle had the AMCATS leading 19-18, battling to stay alive in the match.  Capitalizing on a few Lion miscues, the AMCATS were able to close on a 6-2 run, forcing a 4th game.

Lions senior Cayla Clinkscale (Winchendon, Mass.) recorded 6 of her 10 total kills in the 4th game, leading Eastern Nazarene to a 25-17 final to close out the match.

Daniel Webster 3, Anna Maria 1 (25-17, 17-25, 25-23, 25-21)

Samantha Parker led all players with 29 assists but it wasn't enough as Anna Maria College suffered a 3-1 loss to Daniel Webster College in the second match of the afternoon.  Jessica Goulet led the AMCATS with 12 kills while freshman Michelle Connolly (Quincy, Mass.) led the defense with 11 digs.

For Daniel Webster, freshmen Madeline Roulier (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Samantha Betts (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) tallied 12 kills apiece and senior Ally Hayden (Bedford, N.H.) dished out 16 assists in the 4 game set.

In game 1, the Eagles notched their largest lead of the contest at 18-13, but kills from sophomore Emily Adriaansen (Pepperell, Mass.) and sophomore Alyssa Haberman (Boca Raton, FL) along with an Eagles service error helped cut the lead to 18-16.  Daniel Webster was able to take back the momentum, making the most of a couple of AMCAT miscues, finishing on a 7-1 run.

Anna Maria came out strong in the second game.  While the score remained close throughout, once the AMCATS broke an 8-8 tie on an Alex Rodriguez kill, they never looked back.  They held the lead for the rest of the way, winning game two 25-17.

With the squads splitting the first two games, the focus shifted to a pivotal game 3.  A very close matchup had both teams trading points every step of the way.  The AMCATS put themselves in a good position, as a Jessica Goulet kill provided the team with a 23-21 advantage.  The Eagles answered back in a big way, going on a 4-0 run highlighted by two Madeline Roulier aces to give Daniel Webster the 25-23 win.

The Eagles were able to carry their momentum into the 4th game, tallying 5 service aces on their way to a 25-21 win to close out the match.

Anna Maria returns to action on Tuesday evening when they host Curry College at 7:00pm.
