AMCATS rally for pair of come-from-behind wins versus Chargers

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 14, 2011 – The Anna Maria baseball team erased two deficits in the latter innings to sweep a double-header against Colby-Sawyer. The AMCATS won the first game 7-5, and took the second 3-2.  

Anna Maria improves to 18-12 overall and 11-7 in the TCCC. Colby-Sawyer drops to 8-16 overall and 3-11 in conference play.

Game 1 – AMC 7, CSC 5

The AMCATS jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning on an RBI ground out by junior Jeff Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.). Scafidi, who was on the mound for the visitors, cruised through the first five innings facing one hitter over the minimum and surrendered only one hit.

Anna Maria added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on two singles, a double and an error.

Colby-Sawyer finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth scoring five times to take a 5-3 lead. Junior Justin Martin (Lebanon, N.H.) hit a two-run single to tie the game after the first runner scored on a wild pitch. Senior Shane Hoagboon (Mayfield, N.Y.) knocked in the two go ahead runs with a double to right center.

Anna Maria took advantage of several miscues in the top of the seventh. The AMCATS scored four times thanks to three errors and a two-run single from senior Jim McNamara (Worcester, Mass.). Senior Zach Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.) came in for the save for the road team and got three straight outs including two via the strikeout.

Junior Tim Henderson (Wayland, Mass.) earned the victory out of the bullpen for the AMCATS. Freshman Kevin Keith (Quincy, Mass.) suffered the loss for Colby-Sawyer, but only gave up one earned run.

Game 2 – AMC 3, CSC 2

Colby-Sawyer opened the scoring in game two in the bottom of the first on a pair of RBI doubles from Martin and freshman Andy Lapple (Newtown, Conn.).

Anna Maria cut the lead in half in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly from senior Andy Fallon (Worcester, Mass.).

The teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings before Anna Maria struck for a pair of runs in the sixth. After two quick outs to being the frame, the AMCATS hit four straight singles to take a 3-2 lead. 

Anna Maria hurler senior Brendon Tivnan (Worcester, Mass.) closed out the game in the sixth and the seventh to pick up his fifth win of the season. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four. Junior Ryan Gillan (Alton, N.H.) also threw seven innings for the Chargers in the loss. 

Colby-Sawyer will host Eastern Nazarene on Saturday at noon, while Anna Maria will play Wentworth at noon on Saturday at Assumption.
