Peterson Nets 31, AMCATS Downed 77-72
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (Nov. 16) -- Recovering from a 43-29 deficit with 17:51 left in the second half, Daniel Webster used a incredible 33-10 run over a 12-minute span to carry a 62-53 lead into the final six minutes, then hold off the charging AMCATS for a 77-72 win and a spot in the championship game of the Herb Kenny Tip-Off Tournament here today. Daniel Webster will take on host Wesleyan, a 104-38 winner over SUNY Maritime, in the finals Saturday at 3 pm, preceded by the consolation game between Anna Maria and SUNY Maritime.
Junior Daris Cosby was the spark plug for Daniel Webster as he netted 14 of his team-leading 26 points during the decisive run. He finished with five three-pointers but it was a three-pointer from freshman Ryan Gauthier that put the Eagles ahead for good, 50-47, with 10:30 to go. Once the Eagles led, 62-53, the AMCATS scored seven in a row to get within a basket at 62-62 with 5:10 left. But two treys from Cosby quickly advanced the Daniel Webster lead to 68-60.
Still, Anna Maria would not go away and trailed 75-72 with :35 remaining. After a pair of fouls, the AMCATS forced an inbounding turnover by the Eagles and had a chance to tie with :18.4 left. A three-point try with two seconds left missed the mark and Cosby clinched it with two free throws.
Grad student Brad Peterson led all scorers in the game with 31 points while also pulling down 16 rebounds for the AMCATS. Senior Anthony Click added 13 points and eight rebounds for Anna Maria. Anna Maria had a 48-35 margin on the glass and shot 46 percent from the floor to just 38 percent by the Eagles. But Daniel Webster had just eight turnovers in the game while forcing 19 by the AMCATS and hit 10 three-pointers to only one by the Anna Maria. Senior John Hickson had four treys for the Eagles to get him to 14 points in the contest. Junior David Feinstein, a 6-0 guard, led Daniel Webster with eight rebounds.
