AMCATS Collect First Win of the Season, 73-61

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Anna Maria captured the consolation game of the Herb Kenny Tip-Off Tournament here this afternoon as the AMCATS jumped ahead 8-0 and never trailed in the contest though SUNY Maritime took a couple of runs to climb back into the contest, most notably cutting what had been an 11-point halftime deficit (39-28) to five points at 40-35 with 18 minute to go.  But a 17-1 burst triggered by five points each from all-tournament choice Brad Peterson, a grad student, and senior Anthony Click put Anna Maria ahead, 57-36, to lock up the 73-61 win.

Peterson finished the day notching 20 points and 7 rebounds in 32 minutes of work, while junior Joey Barillo and sophomore guard Hugh Daye each contributed 9 points. Anna Maria held the edge in shooting percentage 52%-39% and in total rebounds 36-31. Maritime connected on seven three pointers to the AMCATS two.

Anna Maria evens their 2012 record at 1-1 while SUNY Maritime remains winless at 0-2.

Wesleyan earned the tournament title with a 81-42 win over Daniel Webster.

Named all-tournament from Maritime was senior Ron Bethea, who led the Privateers in scoring both games.  His 24 points against Anna Maria took game scoring honors.  He netted 16 vs. Wesleyan in the opening round.  Peterson scored 20 points and had a game-high seven rebounds in leading Anna Maria to its win.  His 31 points and 16 rebounds vs. Daniel Webster was the single best performance by a player in the tournament over the four games.

Anna Maria returns to action on Tuesday night for their home opener versus Clark University, tip-off is slated for 5:00pm.
