Football: AMCATS Sweep ECFC Weekly Awards

ECFC Release

PAXTON, MA : In the aftermath of a 45-32 Homecoming Day win over Dean College on Saturday that saw the team improve to 5-1 for the first time in the history of the program, the Anna Maria College football team was recognized by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) with a sweep of all four weekly conference awards for the week ending October 24, 2021 as announced by the ECFC on Monday.

With the victory Anna Maria is currently in first place in the ECFC standings, the sole unbeaten team in conference play.

Senior quarterback Alex Cohen (Plymouth, MA) was named the ECFC Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, throwing for five touchdowns while rushing for a sixth against the Bulldogs. Cohen went 24-for-40 for a career-high 451 yards passing yards and 39 yards rushing. Cohen's passing total shattered the previous single-game total in AMCAT history, that set on November 10, 2012 by former Anna Maria great Santino Simone with 349 passing yards. With three games to go in the season, Cohen is already second in the Anna Maria record books for passing touchdowns in a season with 17 and third in passing yardage with 1865 yards. In just his third year under center for the AMCATS, he is already second all-time in passing yards, passing touchdowns and passing completions for a career.

Sophomore linebacker Sam Jakana (Coto De Caza, CA) was named the ECFC Defensive Player of the Week, after a day that saw him lead the AMCATS with 11 tackles, 2.5 sacks and a pass breakup behind the line of scrimmage. For his efforts, Jakana was named Homecoming Game Defensive Most Valuable Player. Jakana is currently leading Anna Maria in total tackles and force fumbles for the season.

Sophomore wide receiver Deandre Wallace (Waterbury, CT) was named the ECFC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season, continuing his dominant rookie season by pulling in eight receptions for 173 yards – both career-highs – with two touchdowns. For his efforts, Wallace was named Homecoming Game Offensive Most Valuable Player. In the last five games, Wallace has eight touchdown catches. He is currently sixth in the nation in yards per catch at 23.56 yards.

Sophomore kicker Ryan Kent (Marlton, NJ) was named the ECFC Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season. Kent was perfect for Anna Maria on Saturday, making one field goal and going 6-for-6 on extra points. At press time, the rookie was leading the ECFC in field goal percentage at 83.3%, currently ranking 16th in the nation.
