ECFC Weekly Awards - 9/26/21 - Jude Sampson & Deandre Wallace

Sampson, Wallace Named To ECFC Weekly Awards

PAXTON, MA : Graduate student defensive lineman Jude Sampson (Waterbury, CT) and sophomore wide receiver Deandre Wallace (Waterbury, CT) were recognized by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) weekly awards for the week ending September 26, 2021.

Both AMCATS played starring roles in the AMCATS' 29-24 come-from-behind victory at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, with Sampson being named ECFC Special Teams Player of the Week while Wallace was named ECFC Rookie of the Week.

Sampson made two outstanding plays in the game. First, late in the first quarter with Coast Guard lining up for a 49-yard field goal attempt, Sampson got a hand up and blocked the kick, which was recovered and returned 60 yards for a touchdown by junior Donavin Johnson (Kissimmee, FL) to give the AMCATS a 14-3 lead. Later in the final seconds of the game and the Bears driving, Sampson sacked the Coast Guard quarterback for a five-yard loss in the penultimate play of the game, effectively putting them out of 'Hail Mary' range and icing the victory. As of press time, Sampson was ranked second in the conference in sacks for the season.

Wallace eclipsed the 100-yard receiving plateau for the second straight week, with four catches totaling 113 yards and two touchdown receptions. With 21 seconds remaining in the game, Wallace caught a 27-yard pass from senior quarterback Alex Cohen (Plymouth, MA) as he fought his way across the goal line to put the AMCATS ahead for good. Wallace currently ranks first in the conferment in touchdown receptions, third in the conference in receiving yards and yards per game and eighth in the entire nation in yards per reception.

With the victory, Anna Maria is now 2-1 to start their season for the first time in school history.

Anna Maria will be back on the field next Saturday when they travel to Keystone College for a 1:30 p.m. game against the Giants in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference opener for both schools.
