Women’s Basketball: AMCATS Net First Win of the Season

Paxton, Mass. – Anna Maria College posted six players in double figures as the AMCATS downed visiting Yeshiva University 98-78 in game two of the women's basketball AMC Classic Tip-Off held on the campus on Anna Maria College at the Fuller Activities Center on Saturday evening. With the win the AMCATS will face Pine Manor College in the Championship game on Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm, while Yeshiva will match-up against Bay Path College in the consolation game a starting at 12:00pm.

 

Freshman Deja Taitt (Jamaica, NY) and junior Trafficia Warburton (Worcester, Mass.) each posted 18 points for the AMCATS, while teammates freshman Christina Gauvin (Dudley, Mass.) and Taylor Walker were just a point behind at 17 apiece. Freshman Samantha Turcotte delivered 11 points off the bench while second-year player Lindsay Bond (Webster, Mass.) chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds.

 

Yeshiva was led by senior Rebecca Yoshor who delivered a monster stat line. The power forward scored 34 points on 11-of-15 shooting and pulled down 25 (11 offensive/14 defensive) rebounds. Sophomore Julia Owen (Seattle, Wash.) contributed 16 points, 5 rebounds and three assists.

 

Anna Maria put up fifty first half points against the Maccabees shooting an impressive 55% in the first stanza. Senior Taylor Walker (Winchendon, Mass.) was a crisp 5-for-5 for 11 points while Deja Taitt also hit double figures with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

 

Yeshiva's Rebecca Yoshor (Houston, TX) would post an early double-double, tallying 19 of her teams 35 points and recording 14 boards.

 

The AMCATS opened up the 2013 campaign with eleven consecutive points. Walker and Warburton combined for seven of the team's initial points. After Yeshiva's Julia Owen (Seattle, Washington) hit the Maccabees first basket of the season Anna Maria would answer with an 8-2 run to push the advantage to 19-4 with 13:40 to play.

 

When guard Samantha Turcotte hit a running layup at 10:18 the AMCATS would increase the margin to 24, the largest lead of the first half at 31-7. The Maccabees' outscored AMC down the stretch 28-19, to cut the advantage to 50-35 heading into the locker room.

 
 

The Maccabees battled back in the second-half and after consecutive jumpers by Rachel Mirsky (White Plains, NY) and Stephanie Greenberg (Cedarhurst, NY) Yeshiva would only trail by nine, 62-53 with 12 minutes to play. The teams would trade baskets over the next several minute with AMC maintaining 11 point cushion.

 

Finally, the AMCATS duo of Gauvin and Warburton would combine for an 8-0 run with under two minutes to play to seal the victory for Anna Maria.
