Rams Top Lady AMCATS, 56-51

BOSTON, Mass. - - The Suffolk University Women's Basketball team outlasted the Anna Maria AMCATS 56-51 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday night in the Regan Gymnasium.

 

The first half was a back and forth game for both the Rams and the AMCATS. The game was tied four times. The Rams were able to pull ahead midway through when freshman Georgia Bourikas (Hull, Mass.) hit her first three pointer of the night to put the Rams up 13-10. The AMCATS would strike again when freshman Christina Gauvin (Dudley, Mass.) would hit a three point shot to put Anna Maria up 15-13 with just under 10 minutes on the clock. Junior Iliana Quadri (Sudbury, Mass) would make a three pointer to get the Rams ahead 19-17 at 7:49. The Rams would hold on to the lead and take the AMCATS 33-27 into halftime.

 

Junior Trafficia Warburton (Worcester, Mass.) would get the AMCATS on the board first to start out the second half and cut the lead by three when she sunk her three pointer. Rams' senior Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) would then answer with a jump shot and two made free throws to put Suffolk up 35-30. With 11:04 on the clock Quadri would hit a three pointer to give the Rams their biggest lead of the night 45-34. Suffolk would not let down until Gauvin cut the lead to 47-42 with a three point jump shot with just over six minutes remaining in the half. Suffolk would keep up the pace and overtake the AMCATS.

 

Quadri lead all scorers with 19 points on the night. Ruys was right behind with 14 points and a team high eight rebounds. Bourikas chipped in with 11 points.

 

Warburton had a team high 16 points for the AMCATS and senior Taylor Walker (Winchendon, Mass.) netted 15 points and had a game high nine rebounds on the night.

 

The Rams improve to 14-9 overall and 7-3 in GNAC play. This loss drops the AMCATS to 11-13 and 4-6 in conference action.

 

Suffolk is back in action on Thursday hosting MCLA at 5:30 pm and Anna Maria will travel to Rivier for a GNAC match up at 3:00pm on Saturday.
