Softball Fizzle Against Falcons

FITCHBURG, MA: On Thursday afternoon, the Anna Maria College Softball team traveled to meet the Fitchburg State University Falcons non-conference doubleheader at the Donna Lee Withington Softball Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Thursday, April 20, 2023
  • Game 1: Anna Maria 3, Fitchburg State 5
  • Game 2: Anna Maria 0, Fitchburg State 8
  • Records: Anna Maria AMCATS 10-21 | Fitchburg State Falcons 11-18

HIGHLIGHTS

  • GAME 1
    • The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when the AMCATS were the first ones on the scoreboard thanks to a small two-out rally. Graduate student first baseman Ashley Garcia (Cornwall, NY) started things with a single to left-center field. She was followed by freshman center fielder Paige Stewart (Auburn, MA) who singled to right. As Garcia was going from first to third, the right fielder's throw was offline allowing Garcia to come all the way around to score and Stewart to move up to second.
    • The Falcons responded with three rounds in the bottom of the inning and then another run in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead into the top of the sixth when the AMCATS again took advantage of some poor defense from the Falcons. With one out, graduate student second baseman Michelle Cilley (Dracut, MA) and junior shortstop Eden Forget each reached on an error by their Falcon counterpart to put runners on first and second for Garcia. Garcia then pulled a ball just inside the leftfield line to score Cilley.
    • A single run by the Falcons in the bottom of the frame put the AMCATS down by three heading into the final inning. The AMCATS were only able to come up with one run, however. The run was scored by freshman Suzette Scheer (Unionville, CT) after she pinch-ran for junior catcher Saylor Costa (East Providence, RI) who had hit a one-out double. Scheer moved to third as Cilley reached on an error by the second baseman.
  • GAME 2
    • The AMCATS offense was limited to only four hits in the second game including a second-inning double from Forget and a third-inning double by Costa. The other two hits were singles by graduate student first baseman Sabrina Liston (Rehoboth, MA) and Cilley.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Michelle Cilley's single in the top of the first inning in the first game was the 100th of her collegiate career. A bit late of an acknowledgment (Sorry Mo), but hit number 99 for Cilley was a double in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with Norwich. It was also the 27th double of her AMCATS career, moving her into third place on the AMCATS' all-time list. She passed Alyssa Boykin ('08-'11) and is now three doubles short of Mary Moroski ('09-'12) for third place and four doubles short of Tabitha Ruggeri ('11-'13) for second place all time.

UP NEXT:

Anna Maria will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Newton, MA to meet the Simmons University Sharks for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at Daly Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 PM.
