Day 3 of Gene Cusic Classic: The One Where Softball Meets the Rangers and the Wolverines

FT. MYERS, FL: On Monday, the Anna Maria College Softball played a pair of non-conference opponents at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the North Collier Sports Complex.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Monday, March 6, 2023

HIGHLIGHTS

  • GAME 1:
    • In their first game of the day, the AMCATS scored in three of the first four innings but couldn't hold off a late push by the Rangers who scored three runs in the top of the sixth.
    • It took only two batters for the AMCATS to get their first run on the board. Leadoff hitter Michelle Cilley (Dracut) singled to left field and then came around to score on a double to center by Saylor Costa (East Providence, RI).
    • In the second inning, the AMCATS leadoff hitter again reached base, this time it was Madison-Marie Romano (Lebanon, ME) who doubled to left field and moved to third on a sac bunt by Kendall McNamee (Somers, CT). Two batters later Cilley knocked in the RBI with a single to center, giving the AMCATS a 2-0 lead.
    • A leadoff home run in the top of the fourth cut the AMCATS lead in half, but an interesting series of events allowed restored the two-run advantage. For the third time in four innings, the AMCATS leadoff batter reached base when Romano singled to left. Two batters later Rory Hughes reached (Worcester, MA) reached on an error by the Rangers' third baseman and Romano moved to third. With runners on the corners, Cilley hit a grounder to the shortstop who cut Romano down at the plate and left runners on first and second. Costa then knocked in her second RBI of the game with a single to left, scoring Hughes.
    • Sabrina Liston was the tough-luck losing pitcher in the first game, throwing a complete game, striking out four, scattering nine hits through seven innings, and dropping her record to 1-2.
  • GAME 2:
    • A single bad inning cost the AMCATS in the second game of the day as they were unable to make a single early run hold up.
    • The AMCATS scored their run in the second inning behind an RBI single by Eden Forget (Worcester, MA) that scored Ashley Garcia (Cornwall, CT) who had also singled.

UP NEXT:

Anna Maria will wrap up their spring break trip on Tuesday with two more games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, FL. The first pitch of the first game will be at 9 AM against the SUNY Potsdam Bears. The second game will follow around 11 AM against the Clark University Cougars.
