Men’s Soccer Drops GNAC Opener at Lasell, 4-1

NEWTON, Mass. (9/14/13) – The Lasell College men's soccer team opened their 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference schedule by defeating Anna Maria College 4-1. The Lasers remained undefeated improving their record to 4-0 on the year and 1-0 in the league while Anna Maria suffered their first loss of the year, dropping to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Mike Skelton (Conway, N.H.), Servi Barrientos (Providence, R.I.), Jose Cabrera (Quertaro, Mexico) and Caique Reginaldo (Quincy, Mass.) each scored goals for Lasell, while Cedric Dybaud (Weymouth, Mass.) and Alex Parent (Easthampton, Mass.) each tallied assists. Bryan Blomgren (Auburn, Mass.) netted the AMCATS goal, while Justin Hyland (Leicester, Mass.) notched an assist.

Lasell earned a free kick in the 13th minute, and when the ball struck by Skelton was handled by an Anna Maria player earning the Lasers a spot kick. Skelton converted the penalty to give Lasell a 1-0 advantage. Servi Barrientos put Lasell in front 2-0 when his shot was saved by the AMCATS keeper, Andrew Dahl (Marlton, N.J.), but Barrientos collected the rebound and knocked it home in the 41st minute. Lasell led 2-0 at the half, holding an 8-2 advantage in shots and controlling the possession battle.

Anna Maria opened the second half by getting into the scoring column when Bryan Blomgren took a feed from Justin Hyland and sent a shot just under the cross bar to pull the AMCATS back within a goal in the 46th minute of action.

Jose Cabrera pushed the Lasers lead back to 3-1 when he scored on a feed from Cedric Dybaud in the 52nd minute before Caique Reginaldo scored his first collegiate goal. The Lasers strung together a couple of passes from Alex Parent and Nick Carroll (Meriden, Conn.) getting Reginaldo in position on the right flank. His well struck shot found the top right corner of the net creating the final 4-1 margin in the 79th minute.

Miguel Colmenares (Caracas, Venezuela) made one save in the first half getting the victory, and Aren Moorman (Somerset, N.J.) was solid in relief for Lasell, stopping one of the two shots on goal he faced in the second half. Andrew Dahl made four saves in the opening half for Anna Maria, getting credited with the loss, before giving way to Ryan Goehring (Hampton, N.J.) who made one save in the second half.

Lasell will visit Brandeis University on September 18th at 7:00 p.m. while Anna Maria will host Regis College at 4:00 p.m. on September 18th.
