Hyland Lifts AMCATS Past Lynx in Men’s Soccer

Paxton, Mass. – Senior Justin Hyland (Leicester, Mass.) continues his torrid start to the season delivering the game winning goal and dishing out the game's first goal for Anna Maria en route to a 2-1 victory over visiting Lesley University in non-conference men's soccer action on Monday night at AMCAT Field.

With the win the AMCATS start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2007, while the Lynx drop to 3-1-1 on the young season.

Hyland took a breakout pass from freshman Christopher Mattioli (Sturbridge, Mass.) deep into the right corner to draw the defender and then placed a perfect ball on the 25-yard line for sophomore Jeff Fletcher (Oxnard, CA) who stoked a one-timer into the left corner.

After one stanza the Lynx held the advantage in shots (12-3) and corners (4-2) but the AMCATS had the lead at 1-0.

Hyland made it 2-0, just six minutes into the second half, when he beat the Lynx defender and keeper to a loose ball inside the right corner of the striker box, he made one quick move around the netminder and stroked the ball into the open net.

Lesley cut the lead in half in the 64th minute, after an AMCAT foul junior Jordan Santos (Middlebury, Conn.) delivered a direct kick from 30-yards out that knuckled past the AMCAT goalkeeper Ryan Goehring (Hampton, NJ).

The teams played an intense final fifteen minutes with each team creating scoring opportunities. AMCAT keeper Goehring made the save of the day, as time expired, off the foot of Herbin Berreondo (Brighton, Mass.) who had been set up at point blank range for the final shot.

Anna Maria sophomore Andrew Dahl (Marlton, NJ) started between the pipes and made three saves in first half, Goehring had four saves over the last 45 minutes. Lesley's Chase Donley (Elizabethtown, PA) made one save in the loss.

Anna Maria returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Lasell for their first GNAC match-up staring at noon, Lesley will head to Emmanuel College on Thursday night for a 7:00pm contest.
