AMCATS Drop 2-0 Decision to WPI

Worcester, MA --- WPI senior netminder Jeff Wong (Millington, NJ) was called upon to make four stops as the Engineers blanked Anna Maria, 2-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field. With the win WPI improves to 6-2-1 while the AMCATS fall to 3-5-1.

Engineer sophomore Kurt Naugler (Westford, MA) dented the scoreboard early in the 13th minute as he headed home a corner kick taken by classmate Chris Murray (Canton, MA). Senior Chris Ciampa (Danvers, MA) had a great look in the 22nd minute but his shot caromed off the right post. Seventeen minutes later, sophomore Connor King's (Douglas, MA) bid suffered a similar fate as it hit the crossbar. Freshman Jonathan Alicea (Feeding Hills, MA) attempted to level the contest at 17:22 while classmate Christopher Mattioli (Sturbridge, MA) fired off a shot at 28:00 as both bids were denied by Wong. Overall, WPI outshot the AMCATS 17-3 and took all four corner kicks in the first 45 minutes of play.

Shortly after the break, junior Tynan MacLeod (Groton, MA) put the Engineers up 2-0 as he headed in a cross from classmate Connor Bolton (Warwick, RI) at 47:37. Alicea took aim early in the half and Mattioli had an opportunity in the 81st minute as they once again represented the AMCATS in the shot on goal column. The Engineers held a 15-2 advantage in shots and took six of the eight corners in the frame.

Anna Maria sophomore backstop Andrew Dahl (Marlton, NJ) tallied eight saves in 76:30 while junior Ryan Goehring (Hampton, NJ) went untested in the balance of the contest.

WPI  continues a four-game homestand with a rescheduled contest against Elms on Thursday at 7pm. Anna Maria travels to Saint Joseph's (ME) for a 1pm GNAC match on Saturday.
