Cummings earns double-double in loss to Leopards

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore guard Ashley Conway (Danvers, Mass.) scored 16 points and dished out four assists to help the Wentworth women's basketball team snap a six-game losing streak with a 60-46 win over Anna Maria in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at Tansey Gym.

Anna Maria took its only lead of the game (4-2) with 17:45 left in the first half on a basket by freshman forward Kayla Cummings (Woburn, Mass.).  From there the Leopards went on a 9-1 run, capped off by a Conway three pointer, to give Wentworth an 11-5 lead with 16:01 left.

The Leopard lead would grow to as many as 10 midway through the half, with the AMCATS trimming it to as few as four on three separate occasions.  Sophomore forward Chelsea Blair (Holland, Mass.) hit a free throw with 35 seconds left to cut the lead to 27-24.  On the next possession, freshman guard Christine Henry (Tewksbury, Mass.) drained a three from the left corner to give the hosts a 30-24 halftime lead.

A jumper by freshman forward Kendra Kerr (Marshfield, Mass.) top open the second half upped the lead to eight, a lead that was eventually trimmed to three.  However, a 7-0 run – with five points coming from Conway – pushed the lead to 10 with 13:05 remaining a lead that Wentworth would keep in double digits for the remainder of the contest.

Conway was 6-for-12 from the floor, including 4-for-9 from behind the arc.  Classmate Jordan Biggar (Beverly, Mass.) added 14 points, while Kerr chipped in with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists, and five steals.  Senior forward Kirsten Vallone (Avon, N.Y.) has a six-point, 13-rebound, three-block performance for the Leopards, who held Anna Maria to 30.2 percent shooting for the game.

The AMCATS got a game-high 19 points to go along with 13 rebounds from Cummings, while sophomore guard Allison McCarthy (Lynn, Mass.) added 14 points.

With the win Wentworth improves to 9-12 overall and 3-6 in TCCC play.  The Leopards are at Nichols on Tuesday.  Anna Maria falls to 7-14 (1-8) and hosts Roger Williams on Tuesday.
