High scoring first half lifts Colby-Sawyer over Anna Maria

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 15, 2011 – Junior Kaitlin Fifield (Warner, N.H.) scored a career-high 21 points to lift the Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team to a 74-58 victory over Anna Maria on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers improve to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference. Anna Maria drops to 6-9 overall and 0-3 in TCCC play. The first seven minutes of play was tightly contested with five ties and three lead changes. Anna Maria's Samantha Ashton (Worcester, Mass.) tied the game at 13-13 on a layup with 12 minutes to go in the first. That's when Colby-Sawyer went on a 23-3 run to take a 36-16 advantage. The Chargers controlled the tempo for the rest of the way and led 42-25 at the break. The Chargers remained comfortably ahead in the second half, with the AMCATS coming no closer than 11 points. Colby-Sawyer held a 29-7 advantage in bench points and a 34-22 edge in points in the paint. Fifield led the Chargers with her 21 points on 10-15 shooting to go along with nine rebounds. Senior Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, Mass.) filled the stat sheet with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocks. Sophomore Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) hit four three pointers and finished with 15 points and six assists. Ashton led all scorers with 25 points. She also had a game-high 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Freshman Kayla Cummings (Auburn, Maine) recorded seven points and seven rebounds for the AMCATS.
